The Brief
I had the opportunity to help David, Operator Labs’ co-founder, explore an exciting way to digitally host their agentic AI, Mentat, a Twitter/X agent that enables users to create, launch, and trade effortlessly directly through social media. The team was inspired by 16-bit styled artwork, nature, and retro aesthetics, which guided my visual direction, where I sought to balance an engaging and playful interface with intuitive access to information. I was personally inspired by old digital terminals from the 80s/90s, which helped me establish my base for designing this site to appear like a centralized dashboard.
Here was a fun little idea I had to have a section that I named “Mentat Habitat” to add a bit more personality to the dashboard! The team was looking for a unique blend of retro and nature—two seemingly incompatible aesthetics—to fit the persona of their AI agent. It sure was a challenge, but a fun one at that.
Mentat Habitat displays a different environment that changes based on the user’s local time of day. I spent a long time playing around in Midjourney to perfect the vision of the environments I had in mind and then separately pixelated the images with a different software (because the pixelated AI generations were still a bit iffy).
And unlike my prototype shown above, the time would be displayed in real time by the second!
